Tom Fleischhauer employs an “impressionist” painting method to create photo-like snapshots in a variety of grey hues, like early 21st century genre paintings. His work focuses on city life and people in public urban spaces. Fleischhauer’s paintings depict scenes from everyday life, fleeting moments, in which time and the hustle and bustle seem to pause for a few seconds.

Kick off! - No football, no Germany: 10 films pay tribute to the fun and not-so-fun aspects associated with THE ball. A surprising mix of documentaries, animation, the ironical and the fictive. Sure to hit the spot!

This intercultural art project, which will start in time with the EXPO 2010 in Shanghai, connects a kiosk from Cologne and its Chinese counterpart, a xiaomaibu with each other, using video live-stream. This network enables cultural exchange between China and Germany; its results will be screend at the German Pavilion. On Fridays and Saturdays (16.+17.07., 23.+24.07. and 30.+31.07.) music events are added.

Germany is known to produce the most classic electronic music in the world. However, electronic music from young Chinese musicians are not only accepted by the Germans, they are also being labeled as the future of electronic music.

A stroll along the former border and the route of the wall through Berlin reveals a surprising array of terraced housing and estates that were built on the outer edges of (West and East) Berlin as part of 1960s’ and 1970’s urban development projects. Basking in the sun or reflecting its rays, from a distance they seem huge, complex and white – like icebergs floating in the sea. That’s the image the artist Gregor Stephan tries to capture using photographic methods. Visitors to the German Pavilion’s lounge in August 2010 will be able to see how he applies artistic methods to transform the photographs into unusual urban views.

Stefan Kaegi's Cargo Sofia-X is a live spatial model. A site-specific performance for European and boarder-cities. Its freight is its potential and the laboratory nature of its stage production. After two years on tour through Europe and Middle East with Stefan Kaegi's Cargo Sofia, Jörg Karrenbauer brings the converted truck to Japan, Singapore and China. The last show leads the truck through Shanghai as part of the cultural program of the German Pavilion.

Human beat box – oral acrobats of the art of “vocal percussions” – and other disciplines as breakdance and graffiti-art will present current trends in living and leisure spaces of German cities.

Karlstraße is a street of semi-detached houses on a miners’ housing estate in the Ruhr District. The residents’ homes are “living” houses, constantly sinking due to the mining works. Whereas rainwater used to flow to the left ten years ago, today it flows to the right. The situation led to many of the homes being sold in recent years and their new inhabitants redecorated them. So you see one semi-detached house with a newly painted, colourful façade whilst the other house in the pair still has the patina of decades past. The result is a bizarre, divided housing landscape, which photographer Yolanda vom Hagen has documented in her pictures.

Cities Development Initiative for Asia (CDIA) is a regional partnership program supported by the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the governments of Germany, Sweden and Spain. Together with Capacity Building International (InWEnt) and Shanghai United Assets & Equity Exchange (SUAEE) this conference is held to discuss bottlenecks in accessing finance for strategic urban infrastructure together with national and international development finance institutions, private financial institutions, city governments, national/ provincial governments and private sector investors.

Jürgen Chill’s chosen form of expression is also photography. In the series that will be showcased in the German Pavilion in October 2010, the photographs show rooms that were built for a particular function and are furnished accordingly. The artist manages to capture individuality and architectural consistency with an unusually static view. Not a soul is to be seen in the rooms, which the Essen-based photographer depicts exactly as he found them – from a perspective that’s out-of-the-ordinary and thus fascinating: vertically from above.

Wall Blossoms from Berlin - Twelve diverse and award-winning films address the complexities of state-controlled life in East Germany and the period of reunification in wildly varied ways. Twelve tales of power and powerlessness, the joy and suffering of the individual and attempts at escaping the system provide an intricate and authentic historic study.
