Unbelievably, a whole two months have already passed since the 2010 World Exhibition in Shanghai opened its doors. All the planning and preparations have paid off, with well in excess of half a million guests having visited the German Pavilion, balancity, in May alone. And the feedback – from the young and the old, business delegations, school pupils, architects, journalists, politicians and film stars from around the globe – has been positively enthusiastic, as can be seen in our guestbook. We’ve printed some of their comments in our “News & events” section on page 3. The highlight so far was the German National Day on 19 May 2010. Footage of this EXPO day in honour of Germany can be seen in our newsletter film on our website at www.expo2010-germany.com.

It’s not just the German Pavilion that has recently taken more shape; the EXPO team has also grownsignificantly. As early as February 2010, colleagues from the Pavilion management, arts, press andprotocol departments moved into their offices. All hostesses and drivers as well as on-site engineershave also moved into the new premises. Our newsreel shows the experience of their first visit tothe EXPO grounds. About 200 members of the press were allowed an exclusive glimpse behind thescenes in Shanghai at the end of March 2010. Under “News & Events” you can read how the pressconferences in Berlin, Beijing and Shanghai were received.

So here it is – the year of the EXPO! As the new year gets underway, everyone involved in the German Pavilion is gearing up for the home stretch as the opening of the world exhibition approaches. There’s more than enough to do until the doors open but we’ve already crossed off some of the important points on our to-do list, including the successful test run of the interactive sphere for the Energy Source and the photo shoot with Jens and Yanyan (who will be accompanying visitors on their journey through the pavilion).

We’ve now passed the 200-day mark in the countdown to the world exhibition to top them all. In Shanghai, the steel frame of the German Pavilion has been erected whilst the interactive sphere for the Energy Source has swung into action in Stuttgart, displaying a variety of moving images. The visions conceived by the pavilion’s creators are, quite literally, taking shape, and filling us with excitement as EXPO 2010 draws closer. The more they become reality, the more we can show media representatives. And in recent weeks we had the opportunity to do just that, in Germany and China, as you can read in the “News & events” section.

With the summer holidays drawing ever nearer, the world exhibition is fast approaching too. Work on the German Pavilion is well on schedule and the topping-out ceremony will be held in July. So it’s only natural that there’s a great deal of public interest in how construction is progressing. The media are curious too and numerous television crews, from Germany’s ZDF “heute” to Discovery Channel UK to Deutsche Welle, have visited the German plot over the past few weeks. That’s also why our latest news film shows how Chinese and Germans are working together on the construction site and gradually assembling the steel frame of the pavilion building.

With just over a year to go until the EXPO opens its doors on 1 May 2010, there’s still lots to do to turn balancity into reality. Every two months, we’ll be publishing this newsletter to keep you informed about developments concerning the pavilion construction, the exhibition and all the other preparations for Germany’s participation in EXPO 2010 Shanghai. The newsletter will contain background reports on our sponsors, details of exhibits, examples from the cultural programme and information on the work of our EXPO team.
